Twenty years ago, my sister and I bought a business from our mother.
بیست سال قبل، خواهرم و من کسب‌وکاری را از مادرمان خریداری کردیم.
We all love and respect one another and get along well.
ما همگی همدیگر را دوست داریم و به هم احترام می‌گذاریم و با هم به‌خوبی کنار می‌آییم.
We will be finished paying off the business in two years.
ما طی دو سال آتی تمامی اقساط را پرداخت خواهیم کرد.
Our problem: Mom, who is now 77, still draws a salary from us above and beyond the payment for the business.
مشکل ما این است: مادر، که الان ۷۷ سال دارد، هنوز هم علاوه بر قسطی که بابت فروش کسب‌وکار از ما می‌گیرد، حقوق دریافت می‌کند.
Her workload has lessened greatly, as it should.

She could do all of her work in one day and lessen the burden of her salary.

However, she says she’d “go crazy” if she retired.

Let’s begin the vocabulary.

First the title: “high price of mom’s help is drag on family business”.
اول عنوان: «حقوق بالای مادر، مانع پیشرفت تجارت خانوادگی است».
Okay.
خب.
high price right?
هزینه‌ی بالا درسته؟
It means cost a lot and the mom is helping the family business but it’s her help her cost meaning her salary, meaning the money they pay mom is a drag on the business.
یعنی قیمت بالا و مادر دارد به کسب‌وکار خانواده کمک می‌کند اما حقوق او، هزینه‌ی او، حقوق او، یعنی پولی که به او می‌پردازند مانع پیشرفت کسب‌وکار است.
Okay.
خب.
to be a drag.
مانع پیشرفت بودن.
a drag on something or sometimes just a drag.
مانع پیشرفتِ چیزی یا گاهی فقط مانع پیشرفت.
a drag means you hurt something or you slow something or you cause a problem for something.
drag یعنی شما به چیزی صدمه می‌زنید یا چیزی را کند می‌کنید یا مشکلی را برای چیزی به‌وجود می‌آورید.
For example “mom is a drag on the business” means mom is causing a problem for the business.
برای مثال «مادر مانع پیشرفت کسب‌وکار است» یعنی مادر برای کسب‌وکار دارد مشکل ایجاد می‌کند.
She’s slowing the business.
او کسب‌وکار را کند می‌کند.
She’s causing a problem for the business.
او برای کسب‌وکار مشکلی ایجاد می‌کند.
so, a drag.
پس، مانع پیشرفت.
Sometimes we use a drag when we talk about personality.
گاهی وقتی می‌خواهیم از خصوصیات کسی حرف بزنیم از drag استفاده می‌کنیم.
Somebody.

describe someone.
توصیف کسی.
if you say he is such a drag or he is a drag, in that situation, it means not fun.
اگر بگویید he is such a drag یا he is a drag، در آن وضعیت، یعنی شوخ نیست.
not fun.
باحال نیست.
He is a drag means “he is not fun”, but here in this story drag means she is causing problems for the business.
او مانع پیشرفت است یعنی «او شوخ نیست»، اما این‌جا در این داستان یعنی او مشکلاتی برای کسب‌وکار ایجاد می‌کند.
She is pulling the business down.
او کسب‌وکار را دارد پایین می‌کشد.

let’s start the letter.

It says “dear Abby, 20 years ago my sister and I bought a business from our mother”.

Okay, so the mom had the business, it was the mom’s business.

Later she sold the business to her daughters, so now the daughters own the business.

The mom is not the owner now.

She was in the past, now the sisters, the daughters own the business and they love their mom and their mom loves them.

They say “we will be finished paying off the business in two years.

To “pay off” means to finish paying.
«تسویه کردن» یعنی تمام کردن پرداخت.
So we use pay off when you must pay for something over time.
پس ما از pay off وقتی استفاده می‌کنیم که باید طی زمان برای چیزی پول پردازیم.
Maybe every month you pay some money.
شاید هر ماه مقداری پول می‌پردازید.
For example if I buy a car, every month maybe I pay 200 dollars and in 20 years I will pay off the car, means I paid everything.
برای مثال اگر من یک ماشین بخرم، شاید هر ماه ۲۰۰ دلار بپردازم و ۲۰ سال بعد تسویه خواهم کرد، یعنی همه‌اش را خواهم پرداخت.
I paid all of the cost.
تمام هزینه را پرداختم.
So in two years they will pay off the business.
پس دو سال دیگر آن‌ها کسب‌وکار را تسویه می‌کنند.
It means they bought the business from their mom but they are still paying her money for the business.
یعنی آن‌ها کسب‌وکار را از مادرشان خریدند اما هنوز به او برای کسب‌وکار پول می‌پردازند.
In two more years they will finish paying her.
دو سال دیگر آن‌ها پرداخت پول به او را تمام خواهند کرد.
They will totally own the business.
آن‌ها تماماً صاحب کسب‌وکار خواهند شد.
Okay.

One problem or our problem.

Mom who is 77.

So the mom is 77 years old.

now, here the word draw means, takes or to take, right?

you know the meaning of draw like your drawing with a pencil, but here the meaning is different, here it means take.
شما معنی کشیدن را می‌دانید مثلاً کشیدن با مداد، اما این‌جا معنی متفاوت است، این‌جا یعنی گرفتن.
she still takes a salary.
او هنوز حقوق می‌گیرد.
she takes a salary.
او حقوق می‌گیرد.
she gets a salary.
او حقوق می‌گیرد.
she draws a salary.
او حقوق دریافت می‌کند.
We use the word draw sometimes with money, with a salary.
ما گاهی واژه‌ی draw را با پول استفاده می‌کنیم، با حقوق.
Salary means your payment every month from your job.
حقوق یعنی مزد هر ماه شما از کارتان.
Your paycheck every month from your job.
چک حقوق ماهیانه‌ی شما هر ماه از کارتان.
So she draws a salary.
پس او حقوق دریافت می‌کند.
So the sisters still pay her, they pay her to buy the business, they also pay her a salary like an employee.
پس خواهرها هنوز به او می‌پردازند، آن‌ها به او پول می‌پردازند تا کسب‌وکار را بخرند، آن‌ها همچنین پولی مانند حقوق به او می‌پردازند مثل یک کارمند.
Maybe 10 dollars per hour.

So they pay the mom for doing work and they are paying her to buy the business.

so They’re paying her two different things, and they say “she draws a salary above and beyond the payment for the business.

Above and beyond means more than or also or in addition to or plus.

she draws a salary plus the payment from the business, so she has the payment and also, in addition she has a salary.

Above and beyond means that plus more.
بیشتر و فراتر یعنی اضافه‌ی بیشتر.
Her workload has lessened greatly.
میزان کار او مقدار بسیار زیادی کم شده است.
Workload, her workload has lessened.
میزان کار، میزان کار او کم شده است.
Lessened means getting smaller.
lessened یعنی کوچک‌تر.
getting smaller.
کوچک‌تر شدن.
getting smaller.
کوچک‌تر شدن.
So her workload is getting smaller.
پس میزان کار او دارد کوچک‌تر می‌شود.
Workload means how much work you do.
workload یعنی مقدار کاری که انجام می‌دهید.
It’s your jobs at work.
شغل شما سر کار است.
If you have a heavy workload, then you are very busy at work.
اگر میزان کار سنگینی دارید، پس شما سر کار مشغله‌ی زیادی دارید.
You have a lot to do.
کارهای زیادی برای انجام دادن دارید.
If you have a light workload then you are not busy.
اگر میزان کار سبکی دارید پس مشغله ندارید.
It’s an easy job.
شغل آسانی است.
Workload.
میزان کار.
So now the mom has a light workload.
پس حالا مادر میزان کار سبکی دارد.
she’s old.
او پیر است.
she doesn’t do very much, but they’re still paying her every hour she comes to the business.
او کار زیادی انجام نمی‌دهد، اما آن‌ها هنوز هر ساعتی که به کسب‌وکار می‌آید به او پول می‌پردازند.
Okay.
خب.
So they say in fact her workload is so light, so small, so light, she could do all of her work in one day.
پس آن‌ها می‌گویند که در حقیقت میزان کار او خیلی سبک است، خیلی کوچک، خیلی سبک، او می‌توانست تمام کارهایش را در یک روز انجام دهد.
So she has very little work at the business now and if she did everything in one day it would lessen the burden of her salary.

again lessen means “make smaller”, makes smaller and “the burden”, “the burden” is something difficult you must do or something heavy you must carry.
دوباره lessen یعنی «کوچک کردن»، کوچک می‌کند و «سربار»، «the burden» یعنی کار سختی که شما باید انجام دهید یا چیز سنگینی که باید حمل کنید (بار).
two meanings.
دو معنی.
So the burden of her salary, it means her salary is tough, it’s heavy, it’s difficult for the sisters.
پس بار حقوقش، یعنی حقوق او سخت است، سنگین است، برای خواهرها دشوار است.
They must pay their mom every day, every hour.
آن‌ها باید به مادرشان هر روز و هر ساعت پول بپردازند.
She comes and this is difficult.
او می‌آید و این دشوار است.
It costs a lot of money.
هزینه‌ی زیادی دارد.
So it’s a burden, it’s a burden to the sisters.
پس یک سربار است، برای خواهرها سربار است.
So they want mom to work less.
پس آن‌ها از مادر می‌خواهند کمتر کار کند.
They want mom to work only one day.
آن‌ها می‌خواهند مادر یک روز کار کند.
Each week.
هر هفته.
They want mom to work one day so they only pay her for one day.
آن‌ها می‌خواهند مادر یک روز کار کند تا برای یک روز به او پول بپردازند.
Maybe eight hours, then they can save a lot of money for the business.
شاید ۸ ساعت، بعد آن‌ها می‌توانند پول زیادی برای کسب‌وکار بدهند.
So that’s why they want mom to work less, but mom doesn’t like the idea.

She says, she would go crazy if she retired.

“retired” means stop working.

So mom says “no.

I will go crazy, I don’t want to work less, I want to come every day.

The sisters don’t want her to retire.

They say: “she could still come in to the office as often as she wants, she could come every day and do her personal paperwork, banking, letter writing, reading etc.

So it’s okay for mom to come, just to socialize.

Because these are all things she does at work, on the clock.

“on the clock” means when you are working.

It means during work time.

So they are paying mom, but mom is not helping with the business.

She’s writing letters to her friends, she’s reading books, she’s not doing work, but she wants the sisters, the daughters to continue paying her.

“Income” means money coming in.

“Expense “money going out.
«expense» یعنی پولی که می‌رود.
So the business costs are going through the roof.
پس هزینه‌های کسب‌وکار دارند سر به فلک می‌کشند.
“Going through the roof” means going up very fast.
«Going through the roof» یعنی خیلی سریع بالا رفتن.
Their cost are increasing.
هزینه‌ی آن‌ها دارد افزایش می‌یابد.
Their costs are going up very very fast.
هزینه‌های آن‌ها دارند خیلی خیلی سریع بالا می‌روند.
So they are losing money.
پس دارند پول از دست می‌دهند.
And there are updates we should make.
و باید ارتقاهایی انجام دهند.
“updates” means improvements.
«updates» یعنی بهبودها.
improvements.
بهبودها.
They need to improve the business.
آن‌ها باید کسب‌وکار را بهبود دهند.
Make it better, “but we can’t do the updates”.
آن را بهتر کنند، «اما ما نمی‌توانیم ارتقاها را انجام دهیم».
They can’t improve, “while we are paying mom at the level we are”.
آن‌ها نمی‌توانند بهبود دهند، «درحالی‌که دارید تا این سطح به مادر پول می‌پردازیم».
So they can’t continue to pay mom full-time.

Because the business is losing money.

They both mean the same thing.

On top of means in addition to or plus.

Money for the buyout.
پول برای خرید یک‌جا.
“Buyout” means you’re buying a business from someone else.
«buyout» یعنی شما دارید یک کسب‌وکار را از شخص دیگری می‌خرید.
They are buying the business from their mom.
آن‌ها دارند کسب‌وکار را از مادرشان می‌خرند.
So they say oh it’s too expensive we must pay mom to buy the business, plus we must pay her salary every hour.
پس آن‌ها می‌گویند اوه خیلی گران است ما باید به مادر برای خزید کسب‌وکار پول بپردازیم، به‌علاوه ما باید حقوق او را هر ساعت بپردازیم.
These two are too much.
این دو خیلی زیاد هستند.
We can’t pay for the buyout on top of her salary too, it’s too much.
ما نمی‌توانیم علاوه بر پولی که برای خرید یک‌جا می‌پردازند حقوق او را هم بپردازند، خیلی زیاد است.
